What Wiki Software is best?

If you want to have your own Wiki - What Software should you use?

This is not a straight forward question. There are many different types and kinds of script and software available to give you a wiki type site.

It also depends on what you really want to do with your site.
Choosing the 'best' depends on your needs. For a general purpose wiki you could choose mediawiki, pmwiki or phpwiki.

If you want it for more text based - such as text support wiki go with docuwiki or moinmoin.

A good comparison tool is at http://www.wikimatrix.org/

Sorry for no single answer, but alot depends on what you are doing.
If you want any more help let me know, glad to assist.

Also - to get a list of wiki softare you can check out this list at wikipedia.

And they also have a nice comparison chart for wiki software.

What really are Wiki's main advantages:
There are many wiki engines that are free for download and usage.
Wiki software can be used by corporations or by individuals.
The installation of a wiki software is very easy.
Wiki creates a collaborative web site where every member can add and edit content.
Wikis are like forums where posts can be edited.
Publishing an article on a wiki site is easy even for non-web-experts.

and here are some of the basic criteria for comparison.

Who is the creator of the wiki tool - is it a single person or a team?
Is the wiki a free and open source software or do you need to purchase a license for it?
Who is using this tool? A good wiki engine is likely to have a large group of existing users. This is helpful as you might need support running it or just have questions on its functionality.

I hope this helps you to decide on where you want to go with your wiki.
Thanks
Jack
