Luckily, there are several fantastic ways to go about this, some of which can help you to lower the costs of your PPC campaigns while others require no investment at all. Let’s take a look at some of these methods for lowering the amount of investment you need to make when marketing products or services.

First, there are a few great methods for reducing the costs of your PPC ad campaigns. Poorly constructed campaigns can drain your money faster than almost any other form of online marketing, and if you are a beginner, chances are you are making some crucial mistakes that are costing you big time!

Keyword-targeted campaigns are the most commonly used campaigns, so keywords are either your best friends or your worst enemies. Many sources of internet marketing “knowledge” seem to state that giant lists of general keywords are the best route for pulling traffic. While this does pull lots of traffic, short, general keywords are more often than not the downfall of an otherwise good campaign. Lots of traffic equates into lots of per-click costs. General keywords, however, do not generally bring converting traffic. The thing to remember about traffic is this – one highly-targeted potential buyer is worth thousands of non-targeted non-buyers.

Trim your keywords and remove general, slightly-related terms that are only meant to pull more people in. These keywords, in almost every case, will not convert. They will also cost you quite a bit more per click. Go for the long-tail keywords and the highly-targeted keywords. Allow me to explain.

Long tail keywords are keywords that consist of four or more words. Let’s say you’re selling a product to teach people to make money online. “Make money online”, “make money”, “earn money”, and similar search terms are some of the most awful keywords you could possibly use, as these are some of the most over-used and therefore over-priced keywords possible! Use some keyword programs and sites to get some long-tail keywords however, and you may end up with a list with keywords such as “earn more money online today”, “make money as an internet marketer”, “how do I make more money online”, etc. These terms are going to pull less traffic, but if you put together a good number of long-tails, you will still pull a substantial number of hits. The great part is that long-tail keywords are going to cost you substantially less than the general keywords, and therefore you get twice the traffic for half the price.

Highly-Targeted keywords are keywords such as “Buy product”, “Purchase product”, and “Order product”. These terms are very specific, and will bring in those searchers who are ready to purchase a product right now. This is some of the best traffic your site will see!

Site-Targeted campaigns in Google are an often overlooked but highly profitable way of running a campaign. Find the sites at the top of an organic search for your keywords, put them into your site-targeted campaign, and watch those sites’ traffic filter into yours for a fraction of the cost of PPC.

Finally, one of the most effective marketing methods is also free! Article marketing has proven to be one of the best ways to drive quality traffic to your site. The best part about article marketing, aside from being free, is that your articles can bring traffic for months or even years! This is a cumulative effort – the more articles you write and put out there, the more traffic will continue coming to your site. It’s brilliant, it’s easy, and it’s free – give it a shot!

One thing to notice - you would think that someone was out with their camera shooting the video here and there, but in reality this is just bits and pieces from various online sources put together, with a voice over along with background audio.

Some effects are added like fading in and out, etc.

Really something like this can easily be put together once you know how.

RSS - Fresh content on my site

I spent a few hours yesterday researching how to put content via RSS feeds onto my website.

It is a great way to have up to date information that is about your subject always updating on your site.

I looked at a few applications, such as CARP (which I had tried before), Power RSS, RSS Wrapper, RSS FeedMaster, and a few hosted applications such as FeedDigest and RSS FeedConverter.

The hosted applications were easy to use, but do not provide much flexibility. I think there would be more options, but you need to sign up with a monthly account, and I didn't want to pay monthly.

CARP I had used before - it is a free application that now has a couple upgrades to paid levels. I had found it not very user friendly, and did not have all the functions I wanted in a RSS feed converter.

I have a copy of RSS Wrapper. It is a simple tool to put RSS on your site, wrapped by your own content. Not alot of features.

So I was down to Power RSS and RSS FeedMaster.

RSS FeedMaster was created by the same person who made RSS Wrapper. I know he has excellent customer service, and really tries to over deliver on his products. I took a good hard look at everything that RSS FeedMaster could do - and I was quite impressed.

RSS FeedMaster allows you to do about anything you want with your RSS feed - from simple white hat techniques, to sophisticated Black Hat strategies (like removing any trace of ownership and links to an RSS Feed - ok if you own the feed - but a big no-no if you don't). RSS FeedMaster also allows you to use keywords to find the right content for your site. And it allows you to format the RSS feed in any way you need to make it look good on your site. Needless to say, since Richard ( the owner and developer of RSS FeedMaster) gave me a previous customer discount - I snapped it up. I will write a more indepth review once I get it up and running.

Power RSS looked like an excellent tools as well. It did many of the same things as RSS FeedMaster, although could not quite be as flexible with the look and ability to modify the feed for your site. One thing that Power RSS could do that I really liked is create an daily archive of your page with the feed on it. In this way, you could build your website a page a day over time using RSS feeds. I would really like to try out this feature, so I may pick up Power RSS as well and try it out.

I hope that gives you a little idea of the available feed converters that are available. I am sure there are others, and if you find a good one, let me know.

This is not a straight forward question. There are many different types and kinds of script and software available to give you a wiki type site.

It also depends on what you really want to do with your site.
Choosing the 'best' depends on your needs. For a general purpose wiki you could choose mediawiki, pmwiki or phpwiki.

If you want it for more text based - such as text support wiki go with docuwiki or moinmoin.

Who is the creator of the wiki tool - is it a single person or a team?
Is the wiki a free and open source software or do you need to purchase a license for it?
Who is using this tool? A good wiki engine is likely to have a large group of existing users. This is helpful as you might need support running it or just have questions on its functionality.

I think this e-book has the most potential of anything I have bought to date. Not that it has the most secrets. Not that it contains the best strategies. Not that it gives me all the answers.

Purpose of the Marketing Plan

Does your company have a marketing plan? What is a marketing plan you say!

Well many times it may be incorporated into the business plan. But there is a real problem with that. Mainly because too many business plans gather dust on a shelf.

A marketing plan should never gather dust. Rather it should be your roadmap to gathering clients, increasing sales, and growing your business. And just like a roadmap, you must refer to it along the journey at regular intervals.

A marketing plan starts with what you want to accomplish. What is your companies purpose and mission. Identifying where your growth is going to occur, what products and what markets.

Then next part of the marketing plan is researching those products and markets. Finding out all the necessary information you need. Demographics of the markets you are in, or going into. What are the prospects buying now, what are they looking for, what is the need you have to fulfill. Who are your competitors, what do they do better, and what do you do better. About your product, what is the advantage of your product or service over your competition.

The next step is critical. Now that you have the information, you need to set some key objectives. What are your short term, mid term and long term goals that you are wanting to accomplish. Without this, you have no idea whether you are succeeding or failing.

Strategies are the next phase in building your marketing plan. Here you look at the larger overlying strategies, as well as tactical strategies. Marketing strategies are wide and varied - the tools of the trade, and you have to match your business to the correct marketing strategy.

Implementation is key to success in any marketing plan and this is where many businesses fail, particularly new companies. You have to realistically know what you need to accomplish, and how you are going to accomplish it. This should be as detailed as needed so that everyone that is involved can understand what needs to be done.

Finally budgeting, reporting and analysis are the last areas to a marketing plan. Again this is a critical area, that can really make the difference between a successful marketing campaign and a lackluster one. That is because as you move forward you have the chance to change marketing strategies, or just tweak the marketing strategy that you have in place to improve it. But you don't know if are not keeping track of the results.

They said it couldn't be done!

Rather - that you shouldn't do it.

That it doesn't work.

I read it in dozens of reports and guides.

I heard it on endless teleseminars and cd's.

I questioned it in forums, and again they said 'don't do it'.

The way to make money online is cut and dried. Have a simple traffic generation strategy (SEO, PPC, JV, etc). Push the traffic to either a sales page, or even better, a squeeze page. Grab the email (by force if necessary - just kidding). And market to that list til you drop (or make a sale). Then repeat - repeat - repeat!

The typical 'newbie' mistake is having too many choices, too many links, too many options, too much information. Don't give them a mega-site. Don't show them all you have to offer. Don't give away the house - just tease them with a lovely entrance. One room at a time, get'em in, slam the door - sell - then onto the next room.

But . . .

I thought different!

or rather I THINK different.

I know what I always wanted. Somewhere that had all the info I needed. give me choices. Give me good info, not empty hidden promises. Give me straight forward advice, not shrouded in a fog of ideology and testimonials.

And I heard it from others. Newbies screaming out from forums, blog comments, chats - at least until they were hypnotized by the gurus that they were wrong to ask - that they wanted the same thing also.

Piece meal. Only give them one thing at a time. Specialize. Focus.

You don't want general information on how to run an internet marketing business, what you need is this 'concentrated' course on blogging - that will solve all your problems!

So. . .

What's my point.

Does not the paypal and clickbank reciepts of all those gurus prove that they are right. All the testimonials say that they are the experts. That they are doing it right, and my belief is wrong.

I believe in Principles!

Strategies may work today, but may have to be adjusted for tomorrow.

Ideas are great in their time!

Principles last.

I also believe that Big Companies know what they are doing - at least they know how to interpret numbers, read financial statements, see what makes money and what doesn't.

Amazon does not offer you one book at a time - they offer you choices. And when you pick one, they offer you more choices again. Ebay does the same. And MSN, and Yahoo, and even Google (look at all the choices of search you can do from Google).

People like choice, and if they are choosing from what they want, they will choose, sometimes more than one thing at a time.

I have heard on more than one occasion the story of the dog, given two bones, doesn't know which one to bury. OR the starving mule, too dumb to choose what to eat.

Are you a dog? A mule? No!

Give me a choice between a bowl of ice cream and a chocolate bar, I'll eat the ice cream and take the chocolate bar as well. Give me a choice between two cars, I WILL choose the one I want and drive it away. I won't stand for hours between the two not knowing what to do.

The problem, I believe is when people are choosing from things they do not really want or need. When you are trying to force people to buy. When you have not done your job and showed them that they have a legitimate need, and that you have the solution to that need.

Yes when offered two items that I don't really want or need, and someone is telling me I should have them, I may stand and ponder. But not about the item, but rather about why someone is trying to force me to get something I don't really want or need. Whether I am consciously thinking that, or my subconscious is doing it's utmost best to protect me. I will stand and ponder.

What this all means:

I am not going to follow the crowd. Yes I believe that some of their strategies work. And I will incorporate many of them into my master plan.

But I will continue building my site, the way I envision it. The way I believe would benefit the people I want to serve.

I will listen - not to the crowd of naysayers - but to my visitors, my prospects, my clients.

I will test, I will track, I will record, I will document.

And then I will be able to say, was I right or wrong.

And move on . . .

1 - Need a title - Has to grab attention!!

2 - High Quality - if it is not good - no one will read it and no one will click on your link
- not PLR!! - at least not to article directories
- people will recognize that it is PLR, or that it sucks, and will never read you again.

QUALITY over Quantity

with article marketing - you can market anything - your products, affiliate, mlm, etc.

If you don't have your own domain - and want to market affiliate programs - get a domain and forward to the affiliate link. That way people will not be put-off by the affiliate link.

One of the biggest things is branding - so buy your own name - and use it for your affiliate links.

Also, think of promoting your own service, your advice, and of course your brand (your personal or company name, whichever you want to promote)

Use your resource box to add good 'copy' - a short couple points or lines that grab the reader to make them click to your link. And then point to your website.

Keywords are important - make sure in the title, in the article - try for around 3% - but don't let it affect the copy. The article still has to be good quality and a good read.

Blogs work great with article marketing.
Easy to set up!

Use RSS feeds for content, and use RSS feeds for your own content.

2. Thou Shalt Be Lightweight
- Use only fast-loading graphics and other elements.

If you must use large graphics use thumbnails and image
slicing to diminish the size of every file to lessen load
times.

Though the majority of surfers now carry high-speed access,
avoid any content that requires the user to download
special, non-standard "plug-ins" to view your content.

3. Thou Shalt Load Fast
- Each and every entry page on your site should weigh in
under 50-100KB total, including graphics and navigation.

Interior pages can run larger, but the "front doors" to your
site should not make surfers wait long to start interacting
with the site.

4. Thou Shalt Not Use False Code
- You should only use html or asp to create your web pages.

Never use java, xml, dhtml or other forms of code that
require a surfer to keep their browser set up "correctly" to
accommodate your page.

Unless you sell to "geeks" and "techno-nerds," this will
only lose you visitors and won’t make you any friends.

5. Thou Shalt Respect the Search Engines
- If you want search engine traffic use whole web pages that
don’t incorporate frames or large amounts of code unrelated
to your content.

Also, if you want search traffic, actively cultivate linking
relationships with related sites and operate a blog.

6. Love Thy Surfers and Visitors
- Design for "last year’s" technology so surfers using older
computers and slower connections can download your content
and use your site quickly and easily.

Designing for the "bleeding edge" will only cut into your
own profits.

7. Thou Shalt Not Annoy
- Use only stationary text and graphical layout elements.

No Scrolling text, marquees, or large Flash animations of
any kind, including those annoying, full-page Flash home
pages that say "Skip Intro."

This "eye candy" rarely adds to a site’s main purpose and
often causes your visitors to miss something or leave in
frustration.

8. Thou Shalt Not Scroll Sideways
- Design your pages so they never force a visitor to scroll
left or right no matter what the resolution settings on
their monitor.

Sites that read "best viewed at 1024 x 768" really say "look
at it my way because I don’t care about your preferences or
limitations."

9. Thou Shalt Stay Consistent
- Include a standard navigational structure on every page.

Though it may mean a serious challenge for the designer,
users should only need to click once to find every major
section of a site.

This includes using standard link colors in all text links.
Blue: hyperlink; Purple: visited hyperlink; Red: active
hyperlink.

10. Thou Shalt Cultivate Subscribers
- Nothing floods your website with targeted traffic like
sending an email message to your loyal subscriber base.

Whether for a new product launch, affiliate product
endorsement, or holiday sale, that list represents your most
valuable online business asset.

Make sure your website actively cultivates subscribers by
giving them multiple opportunities to sign up and a
compelling reason or incentive to do so.

Then, make it worth their while to pay attention to you on a
regular basis.

Whether you’re a home-based business owner or CEO of a

Html, CSS and other Scary acronyms

I learned to set up web pages using html. This was way back in the 90's. At the time text based editors were all that were available, at least for free. Sure if you had a few hundred bucks to spare you could get Frontpage.

I think that was a good thing. The prevalence of WYSIWYG editors these days, along with wizards that do everything for you, has led to some pretty awful websites. Not saying those sites set up with text editors were all that great back there either, but at least the code was decent.

I have never claimed to be creative when it comes to design, colors, etc. I know it is far from being one of my strengths. But I do know the basics on setting up a website.

I have converted quite a few years ago over to Dreamweaver, and now would never want to lose it. The absolutely TOP feature though is the ability to split screen the view, and see the code and wysiwyg. I do alot in wysiwyg, but confirm the code after that.

Anyway, one thing I wanted to mention is that the 'new thing' is CSS. Well, not really new - I actually started using CSS for layout about 2-3 years ago. Did up a few sites - thought it was the next 'Great' thing at the time. Unfortunately too many browsers did not support the features and it did not display correctly across all platforms. Therefore went back to basic html, using tables again.

But now, CSS is coming on strong. All the new browsers can display the way a CSS page is laid out. Although there still is some peculiarities, most do it very consistently.

So I spent last night converting a site I had over to CSS. While I was at it, I also converted it out of DW templates into using SSI - server side includes. Now this is great - you can have your footer, header, links, etc as includes. Therefore when you change them, you don't have to change the whole site. Great for big sites - saves on all the loading.

The biggest take-a-way from this is that you should not be scared of acronyms. None of it is that hard. It is just a new name, and a slightly different way to do things. Anyone who is serious about their web business should know the basic html. After that, the rest is easy.

Pdf Conversion tips

Which of the vast array of pdf converters actually will convert all your links in one easy task, along with links in images, and create a secure pdf?

Open Office does it. I downloaded and installed it, and it is a dream to use.

That was the one thing I didn't like about PDF995 is that you either had to have your links in http or www format (not text with an underlying link), or else add the links one by one after it was created.

Also, it would not pick up the links attached to images.

I also tried Primopdf and Win2pdf, and neither of these did the job either.

But Open Office will put whatever link is in the document into the pdf. And it also automatically adds security to stop copy and pasteing.

That is nice, as many times I like to go back and edit the document, add more links, change links, etc. And now, all I do is make the change in the document, export to PDF, and presto - out pops a perfect pdf, secure, with links attached!

RSS

I just recieved another email in my inbox regarding RSS. This one was not advertising any product, just talked about how prevalent RSS was now. It also showed many examples of how RSS is being used.

I have dabbled with RSS on a couple sites, but have really not taken advantage of all it can offer. I can see now that this has to move up my priority list.

Allowing the user control, and easy access is paramount. And that is what RSS enables you to do. By handing over some control to the user, and giving better, newer, fresher information to the user - you will be miles ahead of the average website.

And if you wait too long, the average website will be miles ahead of you!

Google Adwords Testing

Google Adwords Traffic Generation Test/Project

Started our first Google adwords project late last week,

with some dissappointing results so far. No problem, we didn't

really expect to hit a home run first time at bat. It is just

a matter of getting out there and keep swinging.

We set up the project with a single landing page promoting

an adwords product. We are actually running 3 tests with 3

different products so as to maximize our results in the

shortest time frame.

We picked out a number of key words and phrases, put in our

Ad, and set it up to run for the weekend. Of course we set up

tracking links and tracking on the website. Along with Googles

conversion tracking we should have a good idea of what is

happening.

Some early results are:

we set our max click rates too low on a number of key words

and phrases - many of the more common ones became inactive

because they were too low.

Some of our key words were not targeted enough - they are

not getting the clicks because our ad and our product is not

focused on the search - we either need to get a new ad and

product to fit - or drop those keywords

Many of our keywords are getting too few clicks. This may

help in the long run, as it may prove to help our conversion to

sales, but right now it is not allowing us to get enough data

to be relevant - we will continue to monitor

The best results is that we are taking action - that is the

first step. And we are learning the tools, how to use the

tracking, how to use google adwords, how to set up our ads,

etc.

By going forward and continue to improve, i have no doubt we

will succeed.

STOP!!!

Before you send one email - before you optimize your site and get tons of traffic from google, msn and yahoo - before you start your PPC campaign I need you to do one thing!

Get you tracking system in place. The one major thing you can do for huge success is have a tracking system to know what makes money and what doesn't. What drives in traffic and what is a complete waste of time.

To start with - you have your raw website data - if your domain host has some kind of program to turn the raw data into something useful - this is a start - although very rudimentary.

The next step above this is a traffic tracking program you can install on your pages. These give you slightly more info than you can get from your hosting company. And the charts and graphs are usually better, showing the information in a more usable form. A few examples are sitetracker, statcounter, sitestats, opentracker, fastcounter, etc. Many of these have both free and paid service.

But if your serious about your business (and you should be) then you need a tracking program that tracks all links in and out of your sites. Something that will track a customer from entering your site until final purchase. Again there are many types of tracking available. You can get monthly online solutions, or you can buy programs you install on your server to track things on your own. Examples of tracking programs are hypertracker, dynatracker, adminder, adtrackz, etc.

The main thing is to get a tracking solution that works for you business and use it.

New Projects for ZedBiz

The team has been working hard on a few new projects lately. I already announced the Marlon Sanders Review website. We will be promoting that site a few different ways and reporting back the results.

Another large project that we are working on is a cross-over between Blogging, niche markets/mini-sites and VRE (Virtual Real Estate) business. I really think that all these could be grouped together under VRE. John Reese, I believe, coined this term, and I think it is the start of something huge. In a way, it is how the little guy can keep up with the huge portal sites that are on the internet today, and stay competive. And the sooner you get working on your own VRE the better, because rumour has it that the next thing the search engines are going to factor in (if they aren't already) is age of the website. So getting started early is critical. I will go into more on this in the future.

Another project we are doing research on right now is a introductory to internet marketing guide. This is not targeted so much at the 'newbie trying to make a buck', but more to the person who really wants to make this their business long term. It will also be targeted for the offline market, to show businesses the benefits, and how to make the internet work for their business, whatever it is. Really more of a marketing guide based around the internet. Look forward to more info on that in the days to come. - We are looking at some different and unique ways of presenting this material, rather than the standard e-book + audio that has become very prevalent today.

Of course we have some minor projects on the go - that actually tie into the VRE business I talked about earlier. Doing some work with Blogs, etc - so take a look at some sites we set up, and are going to do some extensive testing with them:

In the Beginning . . .

I have been making money via the internet for a very long time. I made my first web page back in the mid 90's. At the time I learned how to code HTML by hand. I downloaded a free editor over a very slow dial-up connection and set to work. After I had learned a few basics, I came up with the idea of local businesses having their own web-page, so I headed to a local trade show and tried to sell my idea.

I did make a few sales, but needless to say it didn't make me rich - but it did leave me yearning for better ways to make money on the net.

I will come back to my history at a later time, but just want to introduce some ideas that I want to cover.

I want to talk openly about selling and marketing - how to get and keep clients. I think this is one of the most frustrating areas that new people trying to do business on the net struggle with. So I really want to cover this off with very basic ideas - strategies that have been tested and work - so that is what I will be doing here - I will gather suggestions (even possibly a few live brainstorming sessions may be in order), and then set about to implement and test these ideas.

Another area that I want to cover off is tools. From shopping carts to payment gateways, autoresponders, tracking, blogs, etc - really want to simplify this and know what works for what, and what doesn't.

And finally, I want this to be a sounding board for new ideas, new strategies, new business opportunities. Again, let's find out the good, bad and ugly of what works on the net. And hopefully we will discover at the same time - the awesome, the amazing, and the truly fantastic opportunities that are available on the net.

Well I am changing servers for my main Internet Marketing Blog!!!

I read about how to move it. Seemed easy enough. I needed to move it because some features didn't work on the server I was on as it was a windows IIs server. So moving it over to an Apache based server.

Well - got the html wordpress moved over. Still reading the database from the original server though.

Went to switch that over - and that's when the problems happened.

On my IIs server I am using mySQL version 5.0

On the new host - it is running mySQL version 4.1

To import a version 5 into a version 4 does not work!!!!

oh shit!

So tried to look up a few ways around it - all to no avail - so I am going to copy the posts onto this blog, and then copy them back later.

How to get started - question from a newbie

I am active in a number of forums. It is a great place to keep up with the latest information, to ask specific questions, and to do some networking.

Just today I came across a post - here I will quote it for you:

Hi,

I have been just reading some threads and it seems like more doom and gloom, then money being made on the internet. Is this a viable way of earning some real money or am i just fooling myself into believing that there is a real shot at making a living.

For instance is making $3,000 - $5,000 a month a realistic goal with the abilitity to take time out for myself or is that a pipe dream?

And here is the part that really caught my attention - his signature at the bottom of the post said this:

Give Me 60 Days and I'll Show You How Simple It Is To Turn Your Passion Into $100,000 A Year Business On The Internet!

And then it had a very ugly affiliate link to some program.

I never even clicked the program - why would I bother?

So this was my reply:

A little ironic, or maybe hypocritical for you to be asking this question when your signature claims that you can show me how to make $100,000 a year, which is over $8000 per month.

An easy answer to your question is 'YES'.

Does everybody do it? 'NO'

A few things I would suggest:

1 - don't ask such general questions - learn things one step at a time, and use forums to ask specific questions.

2 - Go find one of those 'Free' Internet Marketing Guides and read it front to back a couple times - so you know the very basics. This will not get you making any serious money, but will at least stop you from asking the dumb 'newbie' questions. A couple I suggest is 'Dotcomology' or 'Black Belt Marketing'

3 - Then check out a number of business models - from affiliate marketing, to adsense, to products (niches, kinds, etc) and decide what you have an interest in and want to pursue.

4 - Next find an expert (many call them gurus, but I like experts) and sign up for their course and follow it to the letter until you make some regular money. You still won't make big money, but you will begin to understand the basics of how money is made online. Remember - at this stage - FOLLOW THE EXPERT'S ADVICE TO THE LETTER!

5 - Now you are ready to branch out, diversify, improvise, dominate your niche, try something new that will propell you forward to making good money online.

That is all there is to it. In a year or two you should be making a good living depending on the amount of time and effort you put into it.

I think that was a very concise answer, and should help alot of people. I am also sure I will get some replies on that post saying that I gave dumb advice. Oh well - everyone has an opinion.

I think the lesson here is twofold - don't sell or promise what you don't know or don't believe in.

And second - don't think there is any 'secret' or 'magic formula'. It's about learning the basics and applying what you learn.

There is an abundance of offers on the net.

And if you subscribe to any (or many as is my case) of the various email newsletters, reports, updates, ezines, or whatever they call them, then you see all the offers.

Firesales, product launches, new products, PLR offers, master resell rights, memberships - it is all out there, all the best, all one time offers, best prices, bonus galore!

So how do you keep from buying and buying and buying.

The biggest thing when looking over all these deals, or any sales letter is keep your NEEDS in mind. Don't window shop if you have no need for anything (get back to work).

I found I bought way to many things if I simply 'checked it out'. But when I evaluate it on my present needs, it was easy to know what to buy, and what not to buy.

It might even be a good idea to come up with a 'need list'. Write down the tools and information that you will need in the next 12 months to grow your business. Make sure these are needs not wants. And make sure you are sure you will be using these in the next 12 months - or LESS. Otherwise things change to quickly.

Then next time when looking at the next great product launch, firesale, or whatever, compare it to your needs list, and if it doesn't fit, you can walk away, feeling good you made the right 'logical' decision.

The copywriting is simply way too good if you do not keep in mind what you are needing. They know all the tricks to make you 'want' to buy. They know how to push all the emotional buttons, how to trigger your gut to push you over the edge.

So keep the logic working for you - not the emotion!

And when life (Job, family, house) get in the way, I sometimes get frustrated at my lack of getting done what I want.

But, always focus on the end goal. Work one step at a time.

Where Am I?

Where Am I?

Where am I in regards to an internet business? That is what I often ask myself. I have said to myself and anyone who asks that I am not in this for the quick buck, that I know it takes a long time to build a solid web business. Also a VRE (Virtual Real Estate) network takes time to get established, build traffic, etc. And even your reputation in the IM game takes time to be established.

And the learning - that never stops, as new products, new techniques, new ideas are coming out all the time. And don't even get me started on Google!!!!

But . . .

Some days I don't really know if I am getting anywhere. I think I spend too much time spinning my wheels. I am always doing something, but is it the right thing.

I have made a very pro-active move to get more 'active' in the IM community. I want to get my name, my style, my reputation, and eventually my knowledge out there. So I have been active in forums. I have been blogging. I know this will pay off in the long run. It is also very introspective, and that helps me to analyze what I am doing and what I should be doing.

I do need to set some milestones though. I need to make sure I am getting done what I need to get done. I am still not worried about it taking time, as I know I am on the right track. I also know that I am gaining wisdom and knowledge, and that I am moving up in the ranks in that respect.

So I am going to make August my month of milestones - a time to set out what will happen over the next year. Some solid goals in place for my IM business.

Tool Recommendations

I just wanted to fire a couple tool recommendations at you:

Statcounter is an excellent free way to track visitors to your websites. You can set up in the same account different projects, so great for multiple websites, or if you want to track various parts of your website seperately.

For Pinging blogs, there are two service I have used. In the past I used Pingomatic.

But recently I have been using Pingoat. This service used to have a bad reputation as they were too quick to judge blogs as spam blogs - splogs. But new ownership has taken over, and they have a bigger coverage than pingomatic, so now Pingoat is my favorite.

And finally a really neat tool from google is Google Trends. This shows the searched of a key word or key phrase over the last 3 years, along with the amount of news that item has had. Great for keyword research.

You can then break it down by country, or time. And it shows you which regions have the highest relative searches of that term.

Latest Updates - 30 Day Underachiever Challenge

The latest great project we are working on is the 30 day underachiever challenge. Ed Dale and Frank Kerns are putting about 2000 of us through the 30 day wringer trying to make internet marketers out of us.

We start right from square one, no knowledge, no product, no website, nothing. Ed and Frank takes us step by step on the road to making that elusive first dollar online.

They do this at no cost to the participants. Well at least no cost that we are paying Ed and Dale. They do not make a red cent off of any of the 2000+ participants.

There is a little cost in that we need to set up web sites, so have to pay for domain registration, and web hosting. Also part of the program is using adwords to drive traffic to the site for testing. But Ed and Frank have a work-around for the adwords if you are extremely short of cash.

So it started July 1. They have been throwing 4-5 or more videos at us showing us various things we need to know and how to do them. Also there is a daily podcast to explain what we will be going over. Then there is always a few assignments. And a contest everyday! Overall, lots of work, but so far I have learned plenty.

So even experienced marketers could learn some ideas from this challenge. And for newbies, it may be a little overwhelming, but if they work hard they will be immensely rewarded.

Online Forums

One of the greatest sourced of information are online forums. There are many on the net. Almost every guru on the net has his or her own forum. There are some big forums geared at web development, seo, and just about anything else to deal with running a business on the net.

I am active in quite a few of these forums. Alice Seba’s Internet Based Mom’s forum is one of the main ones that I check in regularly, as I am a moderator on that forum. I also regularly check in on the Warrior forum, TurboCommunity, Internet Buzz, Adsense and Rich Jerk among others. Many others I pop in at occasionally to check what the latest info is and make a few replies, maybe start my own threads if there is something that I am working on and need some info.

This does a couple things. First of all it keeps me abreast of the latest in the industry. It keeps me in touch with new concerns and happenings. It also gets my name out in the Industry and provides back links to my various sites (I change up the signature on various forums, but ALWAYS have a signature in my posts).

But what it also does is make me part of a community. It gets me involved. It is in a way volunteerism. I take the time to answer posts when I have what I think is valuable info. I help out people by giving critiques of their sites. I do this because others have done the same for me at one time or another, and I will need it again.

Without people taking an active part in online forums they will die. If you look at any thread you see 2 things, views and replies. Yes if you start a thread you want people to view it, but the most important thing is replies. Without replies, your thread will soon fall off the first page and move into oblivion (we all know 95% of forum viewers only view the first page). Replies are the life blood of forums.

So my call to action is get involved, get active in those online forums. Do it for your own good, to get the advantages I listed above. But do it also to keep the forums alive and vibrant. I want your opinion, I want your experience, I want your point of view - I value it, and cherish it!

Social Networking Problems - or is it?

Some comments on the viability of Social Networking. My view is it is too early to tell. Let the industry develop and then see what shakes out. Shortly after Henry Ford started making autos there was over 20 different manufactures, and them may have said the same of that industry too.

The word on the street lately is that social networking is in trouble. Friendster's CEO, Scott Sassa (most famous for firing a blogger who wrote about the company) recently departed in the face of a rapidly dwindling user base. Friendster has also introduced its own for-pay blogging tool as an all-too-ironic money-making scheme. Business networking site LinkedIn started charging for its job listings. Meanwhile, the recent launch of the Yahoo 360 beta has the blogosphere speculating that Friendster, the pioneer, is already on its deathbed. And Business 2.0 has a good article in this month's issue (subscription required) about how the indie music networking site MySpace is, for all intents and purposes, the only successful site . more . . .

Social Networking is a new concept. It is the latest buzz word.

But what really is Social Networking?

Well here straight from Wikipedia we have the info:

A social network is a social structure made of nodes which are generally individuals or organizations. It indicates the ways in which they are connected through various social familiarities ranging from casual acquaintance to close familial bonds. The term was first coined in 1954 by J. A. Barnes (in: Class and Committees in a Norwegian Island Parish, "Human Relations"). The maximum size of social networks tends to be around 150 people and the average size around 124 (Hill and Dunbar, 2002). more . . .

But i think it is much more than that, and we will look into all facets of Social Networking on this site.

ZedBiz Blog Initial Post

Well if this was to be done for SEO purposes like a true internet marketer - I should post the title as Business Solutions Internet Marketing Strategies Internet Marketing Solutions - which is the three keyword phrases of my main site. Then I would make sure and use these three phrases 2-3 time in the first post. I might even bold the keywords here and there.

Well, since I am going to do things a little different, I will not do that. I will try things a little differently.

ZedBiz - my brainchild, began in January 2002 officially (Well I actually just checked to confirm, and I actually registered Zedbiz.com on Dec. 26, 2001 - what the h$&& was I doing working online on boxing day!!). Before that my internet business began in back in 1998 with jeznet.

So back when it all began, my thoughts were to offer a very wide range of business consulting. Thus my tagline was Business Solution Specialist.

This was a little too generic a business prototype, and my interests swayed to investments and financial planning. So I ventured forth into that career (which I still am in to this day as my day job).

Meanwhile with ZedBiz we went more into the marketing and graphic design. Did a pile of websites and printing and graphic design work for a number of businesses in Calgary. For a couple years we published an offline/online newsletter that was distributed free to 20-30,000 businesses in Calgary, generating revenue from advertising.

Well as my financial planning career got busier, things at ZedBiz slowed down. I put it on the sideline for a year, but in the last 6 months have worked on recreating ZedBiz from the ground up.

One of the things we did was to re-establish the old tag line - Business Solution Specialist. I have some big plans for ideas on establishing the brand of being the business solutions specialist. We will be offering some fantastic deals and solutions to businesses to help them succeed!

We will continue with our Internet angle. Internet Marketing Strategies is a core component of the new business model going forward. I am always fascinated by new and creative Internet Marketing Solutions that any business can employ!
